Es gibt in der Musik Komponisten-Interpreten-Kombinationen, die wahre Sternstunden markieren und kaum übertroffen werden können. So zum Beispiel die Verbindung des englischen Star-Maestro Sir Adrian Boult mit seinem Landsmann, dem Spätromantiker Ralph Vaughan Williams. Zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts lernten sich die beiden kennen, freundeten sich an, und Boult sollte einer der größten Vaughan-Williams-Dirigenten überhaupt werden. Die Box mit seinen Aufnahmen erinnert an den britischen Maestro anlässlich seines 30. Todestages am 22. Februar 2013.

Es ist kaum zu übersetzen, wenn es in englischen Nachschlagewerken heißt, Boult sei ein „champion for british music“ gewesen. Man weiß, was gemeint ist: Er setzte sich für den Klang seiner Heimat ein wie kaum ein anderer. In jungen Jahren noch ein Zeitgenosse von Debussy, Strauss und Mahler, als Uraufführungsdirigent so legendärer Werke wie Holsts „Planeten“, brachte er die lebendigen Traditionen der Spätromantik in das moderne Zeitalter der Fonografie mit ein. Als ferner Vorläufer von Simon Rattle leitete er das Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, baute in der Pionierzeit des Radios das BBC Symphony Orchestra mit auf und wurde 1957 Chef des London Philharmonic Orchestra. Erst mit 90 Jahren setzte er sich zur Ruhe! Die Vaughan-William-Box umfasst das komplette sinfonische Werk (meist in Aufnahmen mit dem LPO), die Fantasien (etwa die populäre Fantasia über „Greensleeves“), das Violinkonzert (mit Yehudi Menuhin), aber auch die Oper „The Pilgrim's Progress“. Eine separate CD ist Probenmitschnitten gewidmet.
