Die Inspiral Carpets entstammen der "Madchester"-Szene, einer Gruppe von Bands aus oder der Umgebung der nordenglischen Metropole Manchester wie etwa die Happy Mondays, die Stone Roses oder die Charlatans, die ab Ende der 80er Jahre mit ihrem Mix aus Alternative Rock und psychedelischer Dance Music die Pop-Landschaft aufmischten.
Nach ersten Veröffentlichungen auf Flexi Disc, MC und 7"-EP unterschrieb das Quintett um 1990 einen Deal beim Mute-Label, auf dem dann auch das erste offizielle Album "Life" herauskam.
