Nick Cave formed the bad Seeds following the end of his previous band Birthday Party. The Bad Seeds brought together former Birthday Party guitarist Mick Harvey (drums), ex-Magazine bassist Barry Adamson, and Einstürzende Neubauten guitarist Blixa Bargeld.

The first studio album to be released for 4 years, no more shall we part offered up more of the reflective genius of the beautifully written songs on the boatmans call. No more the rock music of earlier NC&TBS releases. Gone is the arrogant swagger of the early albums, replaced instead by poignant melancholy, intimate accompaniments and bittersweet sophistication.
