»The Rape of Lucretia« wurde 1946 kurz nach dem überwältigenden Erfolg von Peter Grimes uraufgeführt. Da Werk war Brittens erste Kammeroper, einem Genre, dem sich Britten fortan immer wieder zuwenden sollte. Trotz der reduzierten Mittel (wenige Darsteller und ein dreizehnköpfiges Instrumentalensemble) besticht das Werk durch die bühnenwirksame Dramatik und hohe Emotionalität mit der die Tragödie um die Schändung der Lucretia hier umgesetzt wird. Die mit britischen Sängern hochkarätig besetzte, 1993 entstandene Aufnahme unter der Leitung des unvergessenen Richard Hickox wird hier zum Midprice wieder zugänglich gemacht.
