Zündendes Seelendrama
Händel komponierte das Oratorium Samson gleich nach der Fertigstellung des Messiah 1741. Zu dieser Zeit befand er sich auf dem unstrittigen Höhepunkt seines Oratorienschaffens, und das englische Publikum erachtete ihn als einen würdigen Vertoner klassischer englischer Verse. Samson war einer der ganz großen Erfoge Händels zu seinen Lebzeiten und von den Zeitgenossen gelegentlich sogar über den Messiah gestellt. Die Vorlage, Miltons Trauerspiel »Samson Agonistes« von 1671, war nicht für die Bühne gedacht, sondern als kontemplatives Lesedrama konzipiert. Entsprechend ist das Werk, anders als etwa die direkt dramatisch angelegten Oratorien Hercules oder Semele ein Seelendrama, in dem die Arien und Rezitative nicht Teil einer darstellbaren Handlung sind, sondern die Seelenzustände der Protagonisten beschreiben.
Für seine wartet John Butt mit einem perfekt aufeinander abgestimmten Solistenensemble auf, das vom Dunedin Consort optimal unterstützt wird.
