Dies ist die erste Aufnahme (live am 13.3.2008 in der St. George‘s Church, London) der Originalversion dieses dreiteiligen Oratoriums von 1748. Auch in diesem Werk zeigt Händel sein dramaturgisches Geschick, dass er sich nach seiner Abkehr von der italienischen Oper bewahrte: Hauptstrang der Handlung ist die Eroberung Kanaans, des versprochenen Landes, durch die Juden unter der Führung Joshuas, wie sie im Alten Testament beschrieben wird. Händel vermengt dies nun mit einer Liebesgeschichte zwischen dem jungen Hauptmann Othniel und Achsah, der Tochter eines Ältesten. Im gloriosen Schluss kehr Othniel im Triumph nach Sieg über die letzten Kanaaniter zurück und erweist sich so als würdig, Achsah zur Frau zu bekommen. Die Handlung bietet natürlich reichlich Gelegenheit für Händel, seine große Chorkunst einzusetzen.
