Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) ist heutzutage für seine in Zusammenarbeit mit W. S. Gilbert entstandenen in den angelsächsischen Ländern bis heute ungemein populären Operetten bekannt. Diese haben leider sein übriges Oeuvre fast vollständig in den Hintergrund treten lassen. Zum Beispiel seine späte ernste Oper ›The Beauty Stone‹, die sich wie sein ›Ivanhoe‹ als echte Trouvaille erweist.
