In der Tradition einiger anderer Gilbert-"Schöpfungen" nutzte Ruddigore das theatralische Melodrama-Format, um sich über altehrwürdige britische Institutionen und Sitten lustig zu machen. In HMS Pinafore verhöhnte er die Marine, in Trial By Jury die Judikative, in Yeomen Queen Victoria's Personal Guard und in Patience die Ästhetische Bewegung. Ruddigore verspottete die zeitgenössischen Besessenheiten von Etikette und Übernatürlichem, während das Verhalten und die Sprache der britischen Marine im Charakter und in den Äußerungen von Richard Dauntless stark parodiert werden.
