Die aus Eugene, Oregon stammende Tracy Bonham trat erstmals im Jahre 1995 musikalisch in Erscheinung, als Sie mit dem Page / Plant–Projekt No Quarter auf Tour ging. 1996 erschien ihr Debütalbum und hatte mit Mother Mother einen weltweiten Chart-Hit, der auch heute noch zum Inventar jeder guten Indierock-Disco gehört. Dank dieses Durchbruchs folgten Kooperationen mit Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith, Mandy Moore und der Blue Man Group, die sie auch auf Tour begleitete. Masts of Manhattan markiert nun das vierte Soloalbum der Multiinstrumentalistin (Geige, Klavier, Keyboards, Gitarre). Mit Unterstützung von Mixer / Produzent Tchad Blake (Oearl Jam, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits) gelingt ihr erneut eine wunderbares Album im Grenzbereich von Indie, Singer / Songwriter und melodischem Pop. Masts of Manhattan schöpft seine Inspiration dabei erkennbar aus jenen Orten, an denen Tracy Bonham die letzten Jahre gelebt und Musik Produziert hat: Brooklyn und Woodstock, N. Y. „Dieser Balanceakt zwischen Stadt- und Landleben zieht sich durch das ganze Album“, so Bonham. „Aber das ist das Laben: Als Künstler bist Du auf die Stadt angewiesen, als Mensch bevorzuge ich dann doch eher das Landleben.“

K. Reckert in gaesteliste.de: "Ein solcher Instant-Hit wie die zornige Abrechnung "Mother Mother" ist auf dem 2005er Album nicht auszumachen. Die Multiinstrumentalistin Bon- ham scheint sich hier ohne größeren Erfolgsdruck und irgendwelche Anbiederei noch besser als bislang ausge- drückt zu haben. Den Songs, allen voran der passend be- titelten Eröffnungsnummer "Something Beautiful" mit schwärmerischer Melodie, hat es nur gut getan.
