Originally released in 2004, Today's Mathematics eponymous debut is an organic, slowburning poetic voyage through jazz, soul-funk, hippy rock and hip-hop.
The album is a musical meeting of the minds between space-jazz head Cousin J and hip hop junkie Testament (Homecut / kidkanevil). The addition of vocalist Shaheen was the final piece of the jigsaw and Today's Mathematics was born. The influences are disparate; kind of Sun-Ra meets Mos Def, wrapped up in a hefty slice of modern British Soul. .
Multi-instrumentalist Cousin J has been producing music for over 15 years; an original playerin Leeds' notorious DIG! Family and DJ at Back To Basics his musical journey began when he was 16 years old in the rarefied atmosphere of Gilles Peterson's infamous Sunday afternoon Dingwalls sessions. Inspired by the sounds that went on to define 90's jazz in the UK, J started funk outfit Sidewinder whose single "Together / Crack The Crackers" (Tongue 'n' Groove) became a floor filler at clubs across the globe, including legendary NYC spot "Giant Steps".
Testament has been spitting rhymes since he was fourteen, and has been rocking clubs for the last ten years, having performed with UK heavyweights including Jehst, Quantic, The Nextmen and The Haggis Horns. A key player in two of the North's biggest clubs: New Bohemia & The Tuesday Club, he also provides vocals for kidkanevil's live show. The record is a gorgeous mix of styles; from the deep, textured trip hop of "Homecoming" to
the languid, intense soul of "Jesus loves You". The album charts a spiritual journey through the chaos of life using the trademark sound that we call "prophetic soul".
