Der Musikjournalist Kris Needs hat für "Crime & Punishment" 50 Jahre amerikanischer Musikgeschichte durchforstet und über 50 Songs zum Thema Verbrechen und Bestrafung aus den Genres Blues, Folk und Country zusammengestellt.
CD1 widmet sich Liedern über Verbrechen, während auf CD2 Songs zum Thema Bestrafung zusammengestellt wurden. Vertreten sind bekannte Künstler wie John Lee Hooker, Blind Willie McTell, The Louvin Brothers, Johnny Cash, Odetta oder Woody Guthrie, aber auch eine Vielzahl unbekannter Namen. Das Booklet und Cover wurden optisch und inhaltlich von Kris Needs gestaltet.
