Die Aufnahmen zu Live At Birdland entstanden 1963 im gleichnamigen New Yorker Club und im Studio von Rudy van Gelder. Wie auch beim Album Live At The Village Vanguard ist auch hier das Umfeld des Jazzclubs stilprägend für die Musik. Coltrane spielt mit seinem klassischen Quartett, neben ihm bestehend aus McCoy Tyner am Klavier, Jimmy Garrison am Bass und Elvin Jones am Schlagzeug. Zu hören sind unter Anderem brillante Versionen von Afro Blue und I Want to Talk About You.
