»I want to remain a child forever!«, He exclaims the clarinetist Tony Scott in the first, tasty track of the new album Doctor 3 (Danilo Rea - piano, Enzo Pietropaoli - bass, Fabrizio Sferra - drums). And remain »children«, in many meanings of the term, refers here to the music, invoked by Scott as a medicine for the soul, but it is also an appeal to the preservation of his own instincts, which has always been the distinctive stylistic sign of the trio.
It's clear th at the meanings can be expanded further, of course talking about the Doctor 3 and listening to their work: nothing is pre-established, everything unravels from a mood, presented, developed through improvisation, depth, then unexpectedly modified - on the way everything can change, since the close dialogue between the three musicians is unpredictable and extremely fruitful.
The climate of this third album, therefore, comes from the Beatles, present with many pieces - a real leitmotif composition, spread through the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Fabrizio De André and Sting; open and close the album two nice speeches spoken by Tony Scott. The seven mini- suites that group the songs and the quotes are the »Children«, as in the previous albums were »Tales« and »Songs«; the five titles »Forever«, composed by the trio, born as improvisation's cells with the function to switches between songs, but listen to them closer, they reveal and refer to other musical worlds, other ideas, other quotes: as in a game of mirrors, or Chinese boxes.
The album born again suddenly, but in this case supported by a substantial live activity. According to the authors, many ideas on the disc have been born during the concerts, then matured with the public - and thanks to it. In this sense it explains the extraordinary impact of the album, they maintain, in its extreme fluidity, a dimension very close to Live. Despite the conspicuous presence of authors and references to pop, this is an album absolutely jazz: jazz language, so personal, of Doctor 3, language which proves to be matured to the point that it can really read any musical genre.
