Die Legende von Bill Evans beginnt wirklich mit diesem Album, seinem zweiten. Der Pianist hatte gerade den größten Teil des Jahres 958 als Teil einer der wichtigsten Einheiten der Jazzgeschichte verbracht: dem Miles Davis Sextett, zu dem auch John Coltrane und Cannonball Adderley gehörten. Seine Musikerkollegen wussten bereits um seinen Wert (der Albumtitel war fast wörtlich zutreffend, und die vier Endorsements auf dem Cover, die Bill in Verlegenheit brachten, hätten leicht vervielfacht werden können); mit dieser Platte begann die Jazzöffentlichkeit, ihrem Beispiel zu folgen. Unterstützt von Sam Jones und Philly Joe Jones spielte Evans einige seiner schwungvollsten Trioseiten ein, aber die Session wäre denkwürdig, wenn sie nur die bemerkenswerte und eindringliche Solo-Improvisation namens "Peace Piece" hervorgebracht hätte.
