Als Sergei Jaroff 1921 den Don Kosaken Chor gründete, legte er den Grundstein für eine sechzigjährige Chortradition, die eng mit der Weltgeschichte verbunden ist. Häufig musste das Ensemble seinen Sitz verlagern, von Russland nach Berlin, von dort nach New York, später nach Paris. Zahlreiche Einspielungen begleiteten die Karriere der Donkosaken, die ihr Augenmerk stets auf russische Volkslieder legten.
