Man nennt sie fast immer in einem Atemzug:
Gilbert und Sullivan, die beiden Könige der englischen Operette, Theaterhelden des viktorianischen Zeitalters - in ihrer Heimat so berühmt wie auf dem Kontinent Johann Strauß, Franz Lehár oder Jacques Offenbach. Der englische Dirigent Sir Malcolm Sargent, dessen 120. Geburtstag auf den 29. April 2015 fällt,
gehörte zu den ersten großen Interpreten dieser britischen Schätze der leichten Muse. Jetzt erscheinen seine neun legendären Gilbert & Sullivan-Gesamtaufnahmen in einer 16 CD-Box mit den originalen LP-Covern der 1960er Jahre. Typisch britisch, war Sargent als Maestro des schweren wie des leichten Fachs gleichermaßen berühmt. Von Henry Wood übernahm der 1895
geborene Sargent die äußerst beliebten Promenadenkonzerte, mit denen er ein riesiges Publikum gewann. Die Rule-Britannia-Bearbeitung, die jährlich als Höhepunkt bei der Last Night of the Proms erklingt, stammt von ihm. Sargent lebte bis 1967 und hatte Gelegenheit, viele Werke seiner Zeitgenossen ins Schallplattenzeitalter mitzunehmen. Seine Liebe galt dabei auch den Operetten von Arthur Sullivan und William S. Gilbert, die in ihren Bühnenwerken mit Witz, Ironie und aberwitzigen Wendungen die Schwächen der viktorianischen
Gesellschaft aufs Korn nahmen. Die Box vereint die populärsten neun Werke wie The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, The Mikado oder H. M.S. Pinafore. Auch Sullivans ernste Werke wurden gefeiert, stehen heute freilich etwas im Schatten.
Einige davon sind mit anderen Dirigenten und Orchestern auf dem Programm der Box – darunter das Cellokonzert und die hochromantische E-Dur-Sinfonie („Irish“).
