Giovanni Battista della Gostena (1540- 1593) komponierte und veröffentlichte mehrere Sammlungen von Madrigalen. Die 25 Lautenphantasien von Gostena wurden 1599 in Venedig veröffentlicht. Die Phantasien zeugen von profundem Instrumentalwissen und stellen außergewöhnliche Anforderungen an den Interpreten, was nicht zuletzt auf die komplexe Polyphonie, den Gesangs- und Tasteninstrument-Genres seiner Zeit entlehnt, zurückzuführen ist.
