Klappentext
In the 1780s, two ambitious foundational works on epistemology (and later ethics) appeared, both of which responded to David Hume's sceptical challenge - those of the Scotsman Thomas Reid (1710-1786) and Immanuel Kant (1724-1804). Reid never took any notice of Kant, Kant only once made disparaging remarks about his competitor, who exerted an influence on the later development of Anglo-Saxon epistemology that was every bit as significant as Kant's influence on the German tradition. This book offers the first comprehensive comparison of the two epistemologies - their different positions on realism and idealism, their philosophical foundations of mathematics, their theories of the faculties of knowledge, their justifications of first principles and their basic metaethical assumptions. All of this is embedded in a concise presentation of the basic problems of epistemology as well as a detailed history of the discipline from Heraclitus to Kant, which emphasises the parallels between the individual epochs as well as the differences, such as those arising from the deviations between the first and second scientific revolutions.
