Quatermass was one of the most promising of all the early British progressive bands. They could have been rated alongside Deep Purple or ELP if they had just managed to break out into the ‘big time’. Nevertheless, the band produced just one album that has now become a collector’s item. Well produced and brilliantly played, this 1970 classic remains a testament to their potential. Outstanding track ‘Black Sheep Of The Family’ epitomises their attacking style, while the mournful ‘Post War, Saturday Echo’ is worthy of latter day Pink Floyd. Peter Robinson on organ, Johnny Gustafson (vocals and bass guitar) and Mick Underwood (drums) are unsung heroes of Prog Rock, and this CD features a range of material from ballads to driving rock, while string arrangements add further sophistication to the group’s sound. An intriguing slice of rock history by a classy outfit.
