The four core members of the Crusaders had worked together in various combinations and under various names since the mid-1950s. But not until they changed their name from the Jazz Crusaders in the early 1970s and began emphasizing the funky side of their nature did they break through to the worldwide audience they had long deserved. The 2nd Crusade picks up where Crusaders I, the group’s first album under its newly shortened name, left off. With its smoking grooves and adventurous solos, The 2nd Crusade is a seamless mix of modern-jazz sophistication and down-home soul.
