Zeitlose Qualität
Obwohl Delius im Juli 1920 erst einmal überredet werden musste, die Schauspielmusik für James Elroy Fleckers Hassan zu komponieren, sollte die umfangreiche Partitur schließlich einer der größten Erfolge in seiner Karriere werden. Die Londoner Uraufführung am 20. September 1923 wurde von der Kritik als Sensation gefeiert. Auch wenn das Stück von Flecker sehr stark von den rassistischen und klassenbezogenen Einstellungen seiner Zeit geprägt ist, so besitzt die Musik doch eine besondere zeitlose Qualität, die es absolut rechtfertigt, sich in Gänze mit ihr zu beschäftigen.
