Auch amerikanische Hits wurden bei Tempo unter dem Titel 'Beat' verkauft. Vor 50 Jahren erlebte die Bundesrepublik eine Zeitenwende, ohne daß die Historiker es mitbekommen hätten. Zum zweiten Mal innerhalb von zwei Jahrzehnten wurde das Land aus seiner Schlagerseligkeit aufgerüttelt. Was in den 50er Jahren der Rock 'n' Roll aus Amerika geschafft hatte, bewirkte jetzt aufs Neue der englische Beat: 1964 hatten sich die Beatles aus der Rock-Enklave des Hamburger Star-Clubs endgültig auf die Weltbühne gespielt. Das blieb den aufmerksamen Managern in deutschen Plattenfirmen auch nicht verborgen. So kam es dazu, daß schließlich auch das kleine Tempo-Label, das seit den 30er Jahren auf eine lange Geschichte von deutschsprachigen Veröffentlichungen zurückblicken konnte, eine 180-Grad-Wende machte. Die beiden CDs 'Beat mit Tempo' dokumentieren diese kurze musikhistorische Phase mit einmaligen Zeugnissen des Geschmackswandels. Auf den Tempo-Schallplatten, die Bear Family Records wieder aus der Versenkung geholt hat, wurden in schneller Abfolge Cover-Versionen populärer Titel der Beat-Revolution herausgebracht. Hatte das Münchner Label bislang von Volksmusik bis zum Schlager alles auf den Markt geworfen, was sich unters Volk bringen ließ, nahm es mit einem Mal englischsprachige Titel ins Repertoire auf. Das war für ein Label, das zuvor auf Sänger wie Fred Bertelmann gesetzt hatte, ein Riesenschritt. Er und Peggy Brown, Rainer Bertram, Teddy Parker und noch viele mehr tauchten bei Tempo unter Pseudonymen auf. Die Musiker, die für die Münchner Firma den Beat kopierten, blieben größtenteils namenlos, das heißt, auch sie erhielten Pseudonyme. Die Blue Cats, die Venture Five, die Gamblers, die High Tops oder die Four Kings hatten zwar englische Namen, aber es ist zu bezweifeln, daß sie England oder Amerika je gesehen hatten. In den meisten Fällen hört man den deutschen Akzent deutlich heraus. Allein bei den Beat Kings könnte es sein, daß auch der eine oder andere Engländer mitgemischt hat. Bei Jimmy Fields ist die Vita immerhin bekannt: Der Sänger, der eigentlich Claus Herwig hieß, wurde später von Jimmy Fields zu Teddy Parker (siehe auch Bear Family-CD 'Nachtexpress nach St. Tropez') umgetauft.
Während des Studiums der Rechtswissenschaften hatte er einen Sänger-Nachwuchs-Wettbewerb gewonnen und einen Vertrag beim Tempo-Label unterzeichnet. Seinen noch heute gültigen Künstlernamen Teddy Parker bekam er 1962 bei Telefunken verpaßt. Hinter den Tempo-Produktionen stand interessanterweise ein Mann, der zum Top-Manager der deutschen Schlagerszene aufstieg: Christian Bruhn. Bruhn selbst wirkte unter dem Pseudonym Teddy Todd als Bandleader bei Tempo. Er arbeitete dort zunächst ab 1957 als Tonassistent, später als Musikproduzent. Er steuerte auch eigene Kompositionen bei. Ansonsten coverte man in München die Beatles, die Rolling Stones, die Spencer Davis Group - alles, was zur Mitte der 60er Jahre angesagt war. Auch amerikanische Hits wurden bei Tempo unter dem Titel 'Beat' verkauft. Das Ergebnis - wenn auch nicht von gleichbleibender Qualität - kann sich hören lassen.
