Rollin‘ Man“ veröffentlicht.
Arnaud Fradin is fully aware of the human and historical weight the blues carries in its soul. The songs he borrows from Skip James, Robert Johnson, Eric Bibb, Muddy Waters or Luther Allison thus talk about the burden of fate (»Don't Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down«), social injustice (»Hard Time Killin' Floor«), acceptance (»I Can't Judge Nobody«), love (»Good Morning Love«), and the unalienable right of all men to freedom.
As such, Fradin legitimately demonstrates the universality of the prime African-American art form. When Igor Pichon's double bass and Richard Housset's drums start a dialogue with Thomas Troussier's harp acrobatics and Arnaud's own guitar and vocals, the Roots Combo treads on a timeless musical field few artists have explored with such relevance since Muddy Waters recorded his famed Folk Singer acoustic set with Buddy Guy and Willie Dixon back in the sixties.
For Fradin and his crew, it's not just a matter of combining the purity of the so-called country blues with the sincerity of urban sounds. This genuine collection of gems draws a vivid picture of the eventful journey of the blues, from its African roots (clearly present in the Combo's reading of »Steady Rollin' Man«, clearly reminiscent of Ali FarkaTouré) to the soulful creations of the younger generation, as exemplified by a tribute to acoustic master Alvin Youngblood Hart (»Big Mama's Door«) and a nice rendering of Nathan James's »Walk with Your Maker« that reminds us that blues and gospel are two sides of the same coin. We could also mention Buddy Guy's love hymn »Don't Leave Me«, revisited à la Lightnin' Hopkins, as well as what may be the finest surprise in an album that's full of them: an enlightened cover of J. B. Lenoir's »I Get Lucky.«
All in all, mindful of the fact that singing the blues is the best way to cure the blues, the Roots Combo never fails to insist on an essential, yet often overlooked, trait of the genre: the cultivation of hope. The blue note one hears throughout this CD may well be solemn, each one of these recordings remains, first and foremost, a paean to life.
