Mit seiner vierteiligen Serie zur Geschichte des Jazz hat das kanadische Label WESTHILL RADIO ARCHIVES in Zusammenarbeit mit dem amerikanischen Musikjournalisten und ausgewiesenen Spezialisten Allen Lowe bereits eine vielbeachtete und hoch gelobte umfassende klingende Diskographie des Jazz vorgelegt. Diesen Monat startet man ein gleichermaßen umfangreiches wie ehrgeiziges Projekt zur Geschichte des Blues.
Zu hören sind erneut seltene Tonaufnahmen bekannter Größen wie Morton Harvey, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Bessie Smith oder Louis Armstrong, aber auch zahlreiche unbekannte Musiker, womit eine nahezu lückenlose Entwicklungsgeschichte des Blues dokumentiert wird. Allen Lowe informiert wieder kenntnisreich über die Ursprünge, seine Verbindungen zu anderen Musikrichtungen und seine gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen.

Folge 1 deckt die Jahre 1893 bis 1929 ab, also vom Beginn der frühen Tonaufzeichnung bis zur ersten Massenproduktion von Schallplatten. Ein ausgesprochen verdienstvolles Projekt, das als editorische Großtat ohne Zweifel wieder höchstes Kritikerlob und begeisterte Zustimmung bei allen Blues-Fans einheimsen wird.
