Until his untimely death in 2007 aged just 43, South African born Lucky Dube was one of his country’s most toured and beloved artists ever. His music reached millions around the world, primarily through his 22 albums - in Zulu, English and even Afrikaans - many of which have been record breakers with phenomenal sales from around the globe. As a frontline artist in the reggae genre, Lucky’s creativity and inventiveness kept growing from strength to strength.
His expressive baritone was reminiscent of Peter Tosh, whose militant stance won him the admiration of countless Africans, yet his lyrics had more in common with those of more broadminded journeymen like Jimmy Cliff or Toots Hibbert. His energetic live performances incorporating traditional Zulu dances and rhythms, along with his band’s traditional representation of roots reggae.
His energetic band toured with him from continent to continent as South African musical ambassadors, and his live performances earned him fans and accolades wherever he went. Lucky was tragically killed on 18th October 2007 and there are very few words that capture the magnitude of this devastating loss. As a musician, father and colleague, Lucky was one of the most charming, respected, selfless and dedicated people to ever have lived.
