The father of nu bluez confirms his standing as a genius and a precursor with this new release, the fourth chapter of an unprecedented odyssey through the poetic meanderings of the blue note. Mo has taken refuge on the moon this time; in his own iconoclastic way, he's sending us musical dispatches dealing with the often sad, sometimes happy, state of our world. The blues equivalent of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, no less!
For the past three decades, the blues progressively lost their true symbolical meaning. As the white Gods of showbusiness promptly hi-jacked the blues, the black cry inherent in them gave way to screaming guitars, and festival stages pushed rural juke joints and ghetto taverns into the background. Or so we thought.
At the turn of the new millenium emerged a mighty prophet who made up for the genre's dwindling spirituality : Mo Rodgers. Strangely enough, this improbable Savior didn't surface in Chicago, Holy Land of the blues, but in Los Angeles, modern Babylon torn between Hollywood's insolent affluence and South Central's Third World poverty.
Thanks to a revolutionary album entitled Blues Is My Wailin' Wall, Mo recounted the whole history of the blues, from the slave trade of yesteryears to the current bluesploitation days.
A second outing (Red, White and Blues) was soon in the works to cash in on this success.
Thus saw the light in 2007, on the Dixiefrog imprint, of the third volume of Mo's proposed Blues Odyssey, provocatively entitled Redneck Blues. If the first three installments of this Herculean project were deemed controversial in their days, what will critics say of these Dispatches from the Moon? "I had to get away to say what I had to say" says the messianic blues singer. "I didn't move to the moon to escape the realities of the world, but precisely because I needed to have a clearer and more global outlook on the state of our planet."
This sense of hope and perspective makes Maurice Rodgers one of today's greatest living bards.
