On May 30, 2000, the Soul / R&B world lost an icon when Johnnie Taylor's life came to an end as he succumbed to heart failure. Fans were deeply saddened as they realized that not only had they lost a legendary performer but, that there would be no more new recordings. However, this was not the case. Three years after the Soul and Blues star's death, Malaco released Taylor's final album, "There's No Good In Goodbye."
During his 16 years at Malaco, Taylor consistently recorded extra tracks while making his albums, insuring that the label and his heirs would be able to assemble a first rate album of outtakes. This collection includes 15 previously unreleased tracks including five from the sessions of his 1999 album "Gotta Get The Groove Back" as well as unreleased tracks from six of Taylor's Malaco albums. There is also a bonus track of "If You Take Your Love Away," that although released on his seventh album, appears here with a stripped-down mix that dispenses with strings, horns and background vocals. The tracks were chiefly recorded at two legedary studios - Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and Malaco's own studio.
Taylor, best known for his smash Crossover Pop hits, "Who's Making Love" (Stax) and "Disco Lady" (Columbia) is believed by many to posess one of the greatest Soul voices, in a class with Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Al Green. It is no surprise that he placed an unbelievable 40+ singles on Billboard's charts, creating a Sound Scan lead above names like B. B. King, Little Milton, Delbert McClinton, Susan Tedeschi and Bobby Blue Bland. Although virtually unknown outside the black community, it is not uncommon for Taylor's albums to sell 500, 000+ of each release. His audience is fiercely loyal even after his death and this album is a great collection to add!
