The late sixties / early seventies were an incredible time in the life of Freddie King. His following was already solid thanks to a string of solid R&B and blues hits from the past two decades. However, when he had the opportunity to sign with Atlantic subsidiary Cotillion Records in 1969, a whole new rediscovery of the man's music resulted with legions of rock music fans supporting his tours, songs and albums like the one you are now holding.
My Feeling For The Blues epitomizes his legendary career. Appropriately titled, Freddie King's salute to his heroes, Elmore James, B. B. King, Ray Charles, T-Bone Walker, just to name a few, truly receives definitive readings by this late blues master.
The eleven song project began production at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York, with Atlantic's own King Curtis manning the boards. If that wasn't enough powerhouse talent in the room, Donny Hathaway also did the brilliant arrangements, along with some of the most seasoned musicians of the time like Cornell Dupree (rhythm guitar), George Coleman (sax), Hugh McCracken (harmonica), and of course, Mr. King Curtis on saxophone.
From start to finish, this platter captures all of the sights and sounds that Freddie King up on over the years and defined into his own skillful interpretations that warranted him the applause and accolades he achieved in his very short time on our planet.
Elmore James' Yonder Wall just simmers with soulful energy as King's signature guitar licks and haunting vocals open this session. Followed by his very own familiar hit Stumble and B. B. Kings' I Wonder Why, the album captures a groove reminiscent of the early Modern, RPM, and Atlantic recordings from the early fifties. Again, this was King's homage to the era, and it amazingly translates to the listener even four decades after the original release.
This energy played itself well into the halls of major rock auditoriums and festivals in the late sixties throughout the rest of his career. His acceptance from this new found audience was fueled by hip new versions of his songs like Hideaway by rock superstars Cream, Eric Clapton, John Mayall and his good old friend from Texas, Mr. Johnny Winter, who has help contribute to the liner notes on this new remastered edition.
The heartfelt admiration of King's love for the blues genre is further echoed by even more blues standards that made up the remainder of My Feeling For The Blues. Willie Mabon's I Don't Know just cooks unlike other versions of this classic song. Freddie belts this one out for sure, but listen to the great Kenneth Rice hitting the snare alongside the crescendo of horn players.
One of the hippest selections is Ray Charles' breakthrough smash What'd I Say. King enhances the tune as a swinging instrumental, where he mimics Ray's vocals to the tee.
The sound that comes from his strings to the amplifier is second to none. This is just what his trademark sound was all about. Yes, it has been emulated over the years, but it was an original sound that has kept King's name synonymous with the title blues legend.
Sadly, after years of touring, making great albums, and bouts of ill health, Freddie King passed away in 1976 at the young age of 42. He had recently signed recording deals with Shelter and then RSO Records, while he was scoring AOR and college radio airplay with albums featuring his young lion friends Eric Clapton and Leon Russell.
My Feeling For The Blues hasn't been available for quite some time. For this new Friday Music re-release, we have gone into the Atlantic Records vaults and have located the original session tapes. Impeccably remastered by Joe Reagoso, this newly remastered pristine version of this rare Freddie King classic is truly given the royal treatment.
