Credited for sparking the 1960s folk revival in England, Davy Graham has inspired artists and fellow players such as Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Paul Simon. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin have cited Graham as an influence to their music, and bands such as Fairport Convention and Pentangle also show large Graham influence. Recently, he has been working closely and consistently with singer-songwriter Mark Pavey, he has once again returned to the stage, playing live acts, and has also been working once again with familiar guitarists and friends, including Bert Jansch, Duck Baker and Martin Carthy.
Large As Life and Twice As Natural from 1969 is Davy Graham's best work, and its re-issue is worthy of special attention. Graham covers several traditional American tunes from the past, such as the sassy Bessie Smith hit "Electric Chair", which Graham sarcastically calls "One of the most ingeniously subtle of the ´urban composed´ type of 1920s-´30s blues".
Graham and his combo (Danny Thompson on double bass, Jon Hiseman on drums, and Dick Heckstall-Smith on saxophone) turn each of these songs into something that´s both strange yet familiar by doing well-known tunes from the folk blues repertoire with exotic touches drawn from their vast knowledge of global sources. Graham sings lead on these tunes with a pleasant and unaffected voice. He doesn´t try to imitate the vocalists of the past or turn the art into artifice. He sings ´em straight.
Graham´s familiarity with international music finds its greatest expression in the instrumentals "Sunshine Raga" and "Blues Raga". He employs a distinctive, original modal tuning of his acoustic guitar that incorporates both Eastern and Western elements
Graham's back catalogue has also been restored from the original master tapes and is released once more with fabulous new artwork, original sleeve notes and improved sound fidelity.
> "He's my absolute hero, always will be" BERT JANSCH
> "Probably England's greatest guitarist" PAUL SIMON
> "I wanted to be Davy Graham." JOHN MARTYN
> "Davy was and is the Man" MARTIN CARTHY
> "Davy Graham can whistle for the money I owe him for Stairway to Heaven and White Summer" JIMMY PAGE
