In den späten sechziger Jahren gab es in der Gegend um Canterbury eine lebendige Psychedelic- Musikszene, die sich um ein Band namens The Wilde Flowers drehte.
Von der Band selbst gibt es kaum Aufnahmen, dafür wurden, nachdem sie sich aufgelöst hatte, andere einflussreiche Bands aus ihrer verbleibenden Asche geformt: Gong, Soft Machine und vor allem Caravan. Das gleichnamige Debüt von Caravan wurde 1968 veröffentlicht. Es gilt als bahnbrechendes Album, welches die freakigen und gleichzeitig experimentierfreudigen Stimmungen der damaligen Zeit widerspiegelt.
Ihr Sound ging viel weiter als die wechselnden Musik-Stile des zeitgenössischen Underground und das ist es, was Caravan von anderen Bands in Ihrem Genre abhebt und auszeichnet.
In the psychedelic late sixties there was a lively music scene in the Canterbury area that revolved around the band The Wilde Flowers. They never recorded much themselves, however, but after they disbanded other influential bands were formed from their ashes: Gong, Soft Machine, and, most importantly, Caravan. Caravan’s eponymous debut was released in 1968. It was considered a groundbreaking album capturing the freakish and exploratory moods of the times. Their sound went much further than the changing styles of the contemporary underground and that’s what distinguished Caravan from other bands in their genre.
