ALL MUSIC GUIDE ***** "The Beatles fifth UK album contained seven songs used in their film plus seven other songs and marked a move to a softer, more re- flective style. The lyrics are more prominent and thoughtful, and the sound more often features slow tem- pos, acoustic guitars, and other instruments. Here Lennon continued to cry for "Help!" and bitterly de- clared "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" over a strum- med acoustic. Here McCartney took a bluegrass-country turn in "I've Just Seen a Face" and achieved his biggest ballad with "Yesterday" (singing before a string quar- tet). Once again, the Beatles had exhibited remarkable growth and pointed the way for all of pop music to follow." ROLLING STONE ALBUM GUIDE ****1/2
