Mulligan gilt als Wegbereiter für den sogenannten West Coast Jazz; ab Ende der 1950er Jahre schrieb er auch Filmmusik und gründete seine 13-köpfige Concert-Jazz-Band, die auf Platten und live zur führenden Big Band der frühen 1960er Jahre wurde.
