Wer auf den typischen Crooner abfährt, dürfte mit Dean Martin und Johnny Mathis bestens bedient sein. Die Wurzeln des Jazz und Louis Armstrongs liegen bekannterweise in New Orleans, dieser einzigartigen Stadt, wo man sich das ganze Jahr mit Christmasalligatoren als Baumschmuck eindecken kann. Der Sänger Charles Brown war in der 40er Jahren ein Megastar und das Idol Ray Charles. Von ihm stammen einige der Weihnachtsklassiker und wer singt sie besser als der Meister selbst, dem die neunziger noch ein Comeback vergönnten.
Ein echtes Juwel heisst »This Time of Year« und verdanken wir June Christy. Extra für dieses Konzeptalbum legten sich die Songschmiede Connie Pearce und Arnold Miller ins Zeug und die besten Studio- und Jazzmusiker Holllywoods schwitzten im Studio. Noch mehr in die gleiche Kerbe von Peggy Lee und Patty Page, die alte und neue Songs knistern lassen.
Für das besinnliche Weihnachten sorgt Harry Bellafonte mit seinem Meisterwerk, dass sich den Spirituals aufs wundervollste widmet.
Und nicht zuletzt die Alben für den Jazzfeinschmecker und Freund der guten Musik. Auf »Jingle Bell Jazz« geben sich von Duke Ellington bis Miles Davis alle Stars die Studioklinke in die Hand. Stan Kenton begeistert Freunde des Großorchestralen und Ramsey Lewis swingt locker dahin, aber nicht unverbindlich.
Das so was auch in Europa auf offene Ohren getroffen hat, beweißt Drummer Klaus Weiss mit der NDR Bigband und etwas Hilfe von der herrlichen Sängerin Annette Lowman aus USA und einem ganz jungen Till Brönner.
