Dorothy Ashby war eine amerikanische Jazz-Harfenistin, eine der ganz wenigen, die ihr Instrument für glaubwürdigen Jazz und Bebop einsetzte. Sie studierte zunächst als Pianistin an der Wayne State University und wechselte dann 1952 zur Harfe. Sie nahm elf Alben für verschiedene Jazz-Labels auf, darunter Savoy und Prestige. Dorothy gastierte auch als Studiomusikerin auf Alben mit Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder und vielen anderen.
1969 wurde das Studioalbum Dorothy's Harp bei Cadet Records veröffentlicht. Auf dem Album coverte sie Songs von Jimmy Webb ("By The Time I Get To Phoenix"), Burt Bacharach & Hal David ("This Girl's In Love With You"), John Lennon & Paul McCartney ("Fool On The Hill") und anderen. Das Album enthält auch die beiden brasilianischen Kompositionen "Reza" und "Canto de Ossanha" sowie zwei von Dorothy Ashby selbst geschriebene Songs, in denen sie ihr Können auf der Harfe und an der Bongo unter Beweis stellt.
In den 90er Jahren und darüber hinaus wurde das Album auch von Hip-Hop-Künstlern nachgefragt. Pete Rock (von Pete Rock & CL Smooth), Rahzel (von The Roots) und Ugly Duckling waren bekannt dafür, dass sie Musik von Dorothy's Harp sampelten.
