Eine legendäre Aura umkreist die Initialen JATP: die Initialen beziehen sich auf Jazz At the Philharmonic, eine unvergessene Serie von Konzerten und Aufnahmen, die von den 40er bis 70er von Norman Granz, einem der bekanntesten Musikproduzenten der Jazz Geschichte gemacht wurden. Sein Ziel war es, den Jazz aus den Clubs auf die großen Bühnen mit Jam Sessions und den führenden Musikern der Zeit zu bringen.

Dieses 3-CD Set, komplettiert durch ein Booklet mit einem Einleitungstext von Alain Tercinet, enthält mehrere Konzerte (zum ersten Mal auf CD) die in Paris 1958 und 1960 aufgenommen wurden. Hier begegnen die damaligen alten Hasen den neuen Musikern: zu hören sind die Anhänger des Swing (Roy Eldrige, Jo Jones, Coleman Hawkins...) und die Bopper (Dizzy Gillespie, Lalo SChifrin, Sonny Stitt...) sowie Musiker, die nie zuvor in Europa aufgetreten sind wie Stan Getz oder Shelly Manne und sein Orchester.
