Dakota Staton, geboren in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, besuchte die berühmte George Westinghouse High School und studierte Musik, bevor sie in die Musikszene einstieg. Schon in jungen Jahren reiste sie durch das Land und trat in Nachtclubs von Detroit über Indianapolis, Cleveland, St. Louis und New York auf, wo sie vom Capitol Records-Produzenten Dave Cavanaugh entdeckt wurde, der sie umgehend zu einem Plattenvertrag verpflichtete. Dakota hat in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren viele hochgelobte Alben produziert.
