Carmen McRae (1922 - 1994) war neben Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald und Sarah Vaughan eine der großen Jazz-Stimmen des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Geboren in Harlem, New York, spielte sie in den 40er Jahren Klavier im Club »Minton's Playhouse«, wo sich die jungen Bebopper um Dizzy Gilllespie und Carmens späteren Ehemann Kenny Clarke trafen und diese neue Musik weiterentwickelten.
