Ray and his talented young cohorts, Benny Green on piano and Greg Hutchinson on drums, were captured live by Telarc in an October 1996 performance at the famed Boston jazz club, Scullers. Benny Green swings hard. This is his last recording as pianist in Ray's trio.
The musicians put the Brown sound, bluesy warmth and a foot-tapping tempo, back on the map with the global favorite “Bye, Bye Blackbird.” The threesome also put their indelible mark on the Brazilian Jazz favorite, “En Estate,” the liquid-quick “Whirlybird,” and the heartwarming “You’re My Everything.” “If You Only Knew” yields some of Green’s most sensitive and romantic playing ever, with Brown and Hutchinson there to provide sturdy backing.
With an enthusiastic group of fans assembled for this live-recorded performance, the three musicians are spurred on to greater inventions. For its diversity, nostalgia and sophisticated musicianship, Live at Scullers ranks at the top of outings for the Ray Brown Trio.
