Dalmatia through the lens of women's travel writing offering new perspectives on political, cultural, and social transformation.
How did women travellers encounter and interpret the Adriatic region from the nineteenth century to the decades after the Second World War? Drawing on literary studies, history, art history, and ethnology, Women in Dalmatia reimagines travel narratives as a multimedia practice, extending far beyond the written page to encompass a rich array of textual and visual forms. It places canonical figures such as Edith Wharton, Edith Durham, Rebecca West, and Simone de Beauvoir alongside lesser-known travellers, writers, and photographers whose works transformed Dalmatia's place within broader European cultural imaginaries. Bringing together materials from multiple languages and national traditions, the volume traces parallel transformations in place, genre, and women's voices, inviting readers into the layered archive through which the modern Western imagination of Dalmatia was shaped. In doing so, it highlights the distinctive contribution of women travellers to that process.
