Timothy Godbold: Modernism by the Sea, Gebunden

Klappentext

Tucked behind dunes, embedded in wooded enclaves, or stretched along the water's edge, the houses featured in this book represent both a pivotal moment in American design and continuing inspiration from timeless architectural gems.

From the 1960s through the late 1980s, some of America's most celebrated architects designed houses that exemplify the blending of modernism with regional context, local materials, and a refined sensitivity to the landscape---elements that resonate with design aficionados of today. Interiors were filled with modernist furnishings, period textiles, local flowers and plants, raw wood paneling, and lots of light.

It was an era when architects took risks---successful design was measured in light, proportion, and spatial invention rather than square footage. Such figures as Harry Bates, Andrew Geller, Myron Goldfinger, Charles Gwathmey, Norman Jaffe, and Richard Meier rejected spectacle in favor of atmosphere. The houses are not monuments, but experiences---shaped by the local coastline, wind, horizon, and the rituals of daily life. Interiors dissolve into landscape, circulation becomes choreography, and architecture is felt as much as it is seen.

Yet what makes this story compelling is not only the architecture, but what has happened since. In a region where teardown and excess have become the norm, these houses have survived---often against the odds. Their continued existence depends on a new generation of owners who see themselves not as renovators, but as stewards. Through intimate, deeply researched narratives and lyrically descriptive photography, the book reveals how architecture can endure as evolving legacies, carried forward by those who recognize that modernism is dictated not only by clean design but also by an elegantly efficient lifestyle.
