Thomas Metzinger, geboren 1958, lehrt Theoretische Philosophie an der Universität Mainz, leitet dort den Arbeitsbereich Neuroethik und gilt weltweit als einer der profiliertesten Philosophen des Geistes. Er war von 2005 bis 2007 Präsident der Gesellschaft für Kognitionswissenschaft, wird ab Herbst 2009 Präsident der Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness sein und ist bis Sommer 2009 Fellow am Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. Er schreibt regelmäßig Beiträge für Magazine (u. a. Zeit Wissen, Gehirn & Geist) und Zeitungen. Dies ist sein erstes Buch für ein breites Publikum.
