Systemic Perspectives in First Responder Mental Health, Gebunden

Klappentext

This book provides an overview of the field of firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT) mental health and offers accessible, evidence-based practices to effectively address the complex physical and psychological needs of this population.

This edited volume brings together perspectives from clinicians, population advocates, researchers, and first responders to explore the current landscape of behavioral health and relevant challenges, ethics, and cultural considerations. This book is divided into three sections: The first section presents systemic perspectives on first responder mental health, including disincentives to mental health services; the second section presents lived experiences, and the third section provides professional guidelines for treatment and support specific to trauma in firefighters and EMTs. Chapters examine the complexities of organizational culture, safety culture, burnout, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma, addiction, suicide, counseling first responder couples, and building resilience. This book also explores intervention strategies to help first responders manage the stress and grief inherent in their work.

Filled with real-life accounts from former first responders and clinical case studies, this practical guide is essential for mental health professionals looking to improve mental health outcomes for emergency personnel. This book is intended for therapists, counselors, graduate students in psychology, therapy, counseling, and social work programs, nonprofit organizations, first responder agencies, and first responders themselves.
