Constantinople, AD 448. Priscus accompanies Licinia Eudoxia on her journey to Ravenna, but the voyage draws him into a part of the Empire he has known only from written accounts. At the Western Roman court, the Empress encounters a reserve that leaves many questions unanswered, while Priscus finds himself confronted with names and stories that until now have been unknown to him. Among them are a young prince from Toulouse and Honoria, whose paths cross in unexpected ways. From the north come reports of devastated coastlines, and the court prepares an expedition whose outcome no one can foresee.
