The truth of the body cannot be chosen, constructed, or "made" through discourse. It occurs in the sensory-affective entanglement, in the touch of the Other, which leaves us restless - exposed to the reality of our desire. Rebekka A. Klein takes on the challenge of thinking through the restlessness of touch by developing a psychoanalytical-materialist conception of the inconsistency of the human body and seeking to re-explore the ethical from the authority and truth of the body's sensuous-affective power. Touch is therefore addressed not as a secure ethical episteme, not as tactile bodily knowledge, but as a site on the threshold of a crisis with an open outcome. Touch creates a world of inter-corporeal connection and entanglement, in which not the distant sense but the close sense of the body takes the lead. All the more does it stand precariously undecided between injury and tenderness, between disruption and rapprochement. In the search for ethical departures from the customs and morals of the body, touch proves to be groundbreaking precisely for this reason: it does not occur as the embodiment and perpetuation of the good we strive for, but as a confrontation with a gap in the desire for the embodiments of the good life.
