Between March 1943 and February 1945, the 1st Battalion Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire), as part of the 1st (British) Infantry Division, fought through some of the most demanding campaigns of the Second World War. From the final stages of the Tunisian campaign to the invasion of Pantelleria, the assault landing at Anzio and the long advance north through Italy, their journey was marked by hardship, endurance and unyielding resolve. The conditions they faced were as varied as they were unforgiving. In Tunisia, it was heat, dust and relentless swarms of flies. Anzio brought different challenges, with the men enduring months in muddy, waterlogged trenches under constant threat from enemy guns. Later, in the mountains of the northern Apennines, they battled freezing cold and deep snow. Frequently understrength, the Battalion confronted a determined and increasingly desperate enemy, each campaign testing the limits of their resilience. Yet throughout, the 1st Loyals earned a reputation for steadfastness and courage in both attack and defence. A strong core of experienced non-commissioned officers and capable leaders held together a battalion of civilian soldiers, fostering discipline, care and unity in the face of adversity. For more than eighty years, their story has remained largely untold. Drawing on personal accounts, letters and previously unseen photographs, The Loyals Were There restores the voices of those who served and ensures that their contribution will not be forgotten.
