Biografie
Peter Benchley (1940 - 2006) entstammte einer New Yorker Schriftstellerfamilie und war als Journalist für die Washington Post und für Newsweek tätig. Später arbeitete er u.a. als Redenschreiber für Lyndon B. Johnson. Peter Benchley hatte 1974 seinen größten Erfolg mit Der weiße Hai (Jaws), das ein weltweiter Bestseller wurde und sich über 20 Millionen Mal verkaufte. Er verarbeitete in diesem Buch Vorfälle, die sich 1916 während der Haiangriffe an der Küste von New Jersey ereignet hatten. Das Buch wurde 1975 von Steven Spielberg verfilmt und der größte Erfolg der Filmgeschichte. Durch den Film und seinen Roman schürte Benchley die Angst der Menschen vor Haien, was er sein Leben lang bereute. Benchley versuchte bis zu seinem Tod die Menschen über Haie aufzuklären.
