Klappentext

Explore recent developments in zoo management and research with this cutting-edge introduction

Zoo biology deals with the reproduction, demographics, genetics, behaviour, medicine, husbandry, nutrition, conservation and all empirical aspects of the exhibition, maintenance and breeding of wild animals in zoos, wildlife parks and aquariums. Zoo management focuses on the balance between excellent animal management and care with an optimal visitor experience. Both have been transformed in recent years and there has been a significant increase in the quantity of research taking place in zoos. As well as a general trend towards the adoption of evidence-based animal husbandry, there is a greater focus on the conservation and management of lower vertebrates and invertebrates, animal well-being, the links between in-situ and ex-situ conservation and the use of new technology.

The second edition of An Introduction to Zoo Biology and Management takes an evidence-based approach towards animal husbandry and supplies a fully updated and cutting-edge introduction to the science and administration of zoos. Expanded dramatically to reflect new developments in the subject, yet retaining its accessible introductory character, it remains the essential textbook in the field.

Readers of the second edition of An Introduction to Zoo Biology and Management will find that:

• the text has been largely reorganised, rewritten and updated, with new chapters on aquariums and aquatic exhibits, visitor behaviour and human-animal interactions, and how to conduct scientific studies in zoos
• the book takes an international approach, drawing on examples from zoos, aquariums and field conservation projects around the world
• the legal regulation of zoos is considered in detail, and the text has been updated to include the most important provisions of the Standards of Modern Zoo Practice for Great Britain; perhaps the highest zoo standards in the world.
• Most of the photographs have been replaced and many show new, state-of-the-art exhibits from zoos and aquariums around the world.
• Exercises are included at the end of each chapter, and lecturers and their students can access all the photographs, diagrams and graphs in the book online.

The book concludes with three appendices which include an illustrated classification of the major taxonomic groups in the animal kingdom - focussing on those normally kept in zoos and aquariums - along with lists of studbooks, conservation breeding programmes, and organisations concerned with zoos and wildlife conservation.

AnIntroduction to Zoo Biology and Management is a useful reference for students on both undergraduate and graduate courses in zoo biology, animal care, animal management, animal behaviour, and related fields, as well as early-career zoo professionals and veterinarians looking for an introduction to biology and management in zoos.
