When a young family moves onto a ranch near Luckenbach, would-be visitors and family members keep their distance due to the sentries guarding the farmhouse-buzzing beehives in the side yard, pet hawks perched atop the back fence rails, and snakes that sun themselves (uninvited) on the warped-board front porch. The only visitor brave enough to step inside the yard fence is a roadrunner they name Rausch, who tiptoes across the porch at sunrise to hunt for snakes.

One morning Rausch hurries away with something other than a reptile dangling from his beak, leaving the family to wonder where he's taking it-a mystery best solved in a Texas tall tale.
