Klappentext
How did a diversity of colonial middlemen and agencies shape not only everyday colonial life, but the dynamics and growth of the colonial city? This is the central question that informs Dividing Dar. As a form of global microhistory, the manuscript illustrates how global forces played out on the ground and in the construction of the colonial city in East Africa. By focusing on the role of Asian, Arab, and African elites, the book shows negotiations, which ranged widely between collaboration and contestation, shaped colonial urban planning processes, which ultimately determined which residents would maintain rights to live and work in the city.Dividing Dar offers a novel approach to urban history. Contrasting the traditional focus of colonial urban history on top-down urban planning, knowledge production and municipal politics, the book builds on a growing body of literature on colonial intermediaries in dealing with questions of subaltern agency, constructions of socio-cultural categories, and hierarchies and their materializations across urban space.
