The book is about the beach as a threshold. Over two years I photographed four beaches in Bali: Sanur, Seseh, Pasut and Munggu. Bali is often seen as an idyll, but what I see every day is more complex. Offerings and ceremonies happen with great constancy, and right next to them there are rubbish, construction and change. Neither cancels out the other. I made the photographs spontaneously with my mobile phone, and only afterwards did I see the common thread: the beach as a place where perception, use and memory meet.
